Nowadays carbohydrates are contained in most fods we eat daily, but what are carbohydrates? and where can we find them?
What are carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are substances which occur naturally in the body. This substance is essential, which means that we are dependent on food for a sufficient intake of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are next to Proteins and fats, a fuel source on which our body runs. We can find them in plant based foods like fruits, vegetables and cereals. In addition many athletes use extra carbohydrates for the promotion of training, in the form of so-called energy drinks and bars.
Two kinds of carbohydrates
Carbohydrates provide the body with energy, however, there are two types of carbohydrates. The first type are fast acting carbohydrates which are rapidly converted by the body and provides a quick energy to the body. Such carbohydrates are often used in pro-workout supplements, These carbs are converted to sugars for a fast form of energy!
The second type of carbohydrates is the slow acting form. These carbohydrates are slowly converted or absorbed by the body and deliver energy over a longer periode of time. This type of carbohydrates are often used in shakes, to get extra energy during the day!

Many sports supplements contain a combination of carbohydrates and proteins, both for promoting a good workout. By combining both nutrients, the sportsman supplies his or her body with important basic nutrients!
